Stand up and Passing the guard

We learned 2 things Saturday...

1.) If someone grabs you by the shoulder you can first bring your arm up and around theirs. Assuming they keep their arm on your shoulder, so that their elbow is bent, you would then step sideways, you would cup your fist, and pull up. Dont step too far that his elbow is beyond your body, or don't put your arm too far up his arm or else it won't lock properly.

2.) We learned how to do a passing the guard in a different way. It starts off normally, where you hold them down, keeping the arm tight (this is important, else they can get a triangle). After you put one leg (the same side you're holding down) into their butt and then the other leg at a 90 degree angle to break their hold, you would try to hold their leg down with your knee. Except a sweep usually comes. So what you do is you would grab under the leg as they shift their hips, and throw it over. If it gets caught on your head/neck, you would shift up onto them, and grab their neck... All the while keeping your original hold tight. And then you get into side control.

After class, i practiced with ROTC again today. I wanted to try this guard passing, but i kept getting triangled. He would hold my sleeve, and at the last moment he would pull on it so that my arm wasn't tight. It was pretty frustrating. Also he is so tall he can just reach up and grab my collar pretty much whenever. He plays like he can be in full guard and not tire out, but I'm not so sure. Anyway, I had to cut that session short as he busted my nose and I had to grab a towel. It was an accident, but just goes to show how quickyl things can get out of hand.
